Thanks for your reply. The thread you mentioned is largely concerned with Python, not Java.

There is a mention on it of using the Logger class in java, but that doesnt seem to diplay either. I may be using it wrong

would anyone be able to offer further advice ?

In particular "Did you download the updated starter package apps?" should be repeated. I.e. do you actually see the error stream from your bot? (Edit: Though now I see it doesn't actually contain a link to said starter packages.)

IOW: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=534, did you download updated .jar files here?

With the 1.2 jars, I can do debug outputs with just System.err.println()...
