Bots vs Humans

How well would humans do against our top bots? Assuming there is a fixed time limit to make each move.

I suspect the humans wouldn't do too well.

humans can do nothing even against bots from 6xx positions, i think - in realtime

and humans can do nothing against top100 bots even if they have unlimited time for each turn

Well, with unlimited time, any human player could be as good as the best bot, if the source is known. Just interpret the source, follow the algorithm yourself. It would take some time, but I guess it can be done.

What about short, but limited time, say 1 minute per turn?

Yesterday I played Galcon for the first time. I downloaded the free lite version for my iPod touch. The game is very cool. You can select a large variety of computer opponent difficulties. However, the AI is not very strong. On harder difficulty levels the AI is given a few advantages, which make the game very challenging for the human:

1. You do not see the count of ships on enemy planets
2. You do not see the exact count of ships in Fleets
3. Enemy fleets can hover and change their destination planet in mid-air! This makes things really hard.
4. You do not have exact control over your ships, you can only send them in batches of 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%. This is fine for an iPod game, but wouldn't be accurate enough in a real test against AI bots.

Overall I feel that Galcon was designed with fun in mind, rather than a deep strategy game like PlanetWars. I wonder if Galcon designers are thinking of using our bots for their AI?

In real time a human wouldn't stand a chance. However, if the game is played turn based with unlimited time for the human then I suspect humans to beat every bot on this ladder.
