Organizers: we need another decisions

Postby space.invaders » Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:37 pm

Let me start with saying that I really like that contest, and that I appreciate all the work that people invest in running it.

Nevertheless, I find the vagueness of the rules at that stage quite disturbing.

I think we urgently need a decision on the number of turns.

The advise of organizers seems to be (see the maps discussion) not to make any assumptions. The problem with that is, that doing so, you may be in a disadvantage. If you assume a certain number of turns (say 200), then you can avoid a couple of things, such as capturing a neutral planet that doesn't have enough growth rate to pay you back the ships you lost.

I'm sure some participants will make the assumption that a game has 200 turns. If that will indeed be the case, they will have an advantage.

Now the organizers may say "they did not follow our advice and they made an assumption on the number of turns, but they only had an advantage because they were lucky".
And this is exactly my point. I would not like participants to finish at a lower or higher rank because they were lucky or unlucky. The only way to avoid this is by making and publishing a decision.

I don't see what you are waiting for.

I thought the number of turns has been fixed to 200?

There's nothing interesting to gain by changing the turn count. I don't think this will be changed.
Someone did a test on how fast battles are resolved, and it looks like 250 is optimal, but we'll probably keep it on 200. Changing this has nothing to do with AI smartness.

If the number of turns is not provided to the bot then it absolutely MUST be fixed and well known. Otherwise we have hidden information, which we cannot deal with.

It would be kind of interesting to see games where the number of turns is small, say <50. In such games the best strategy might be not to attack at all and just take neutrals.

Changing this has nothing to do with AI smartness.

Changing this won't affect my bot because it is dumb as a stump, but a smart bot ought to be using turn-count and last-turn in its strategic calculations. The desirability of a neutral planet goes negative at a certain point.
Thus, unlike planet count and distribution, this change actually could require a code change for a properly written bot.
Not a big deal, but is actually does have *something* to do with AI smartness. :?
