Arimaa AI Challenge

Postby omar » Fri Dec 03, 2010 6:49 pm

Now that the Plant Wars contest is over, maybe some of the teams here might be interested in another AI Challenge.

The Arimaa AI Challenge was officially announced in 2003 [1]. The challenge offers a prize of $10,000 USD to the first individual, company or organization that can develop a program able to defeat the top human Arimaa players in an official challenge match before the year 2020. Arimaa is a two player perfect information strategy game that can be played using a standard Chess set. The creation of Arimaa was inspired by Garry Kasparov's lose to Deep Blue and it was thus designed to be difficult for computers, while being fun and easy for humans. Each year since 2004 a yearly challenge match has been held and many attempts have been made to win the challenge prize. So far the humans have prevailed.

More information about Arimaa and the challenge can be found in this introductory Wikipedia article

and at the official Arimaa web site

BTW, I found out about this contest when Janzert who is also working on an Arimaa bot posted about the contest in the forum over on the Arimaa web site.

We could certainly use some more bot developers over in the Arimaa community. The humans have been beating up our programs for quite a while now. ;)

Although the top humans are still better than the bots, the top bots have improved quite a bit over the years and not easy to beat:

The next challenge match will begin on April 4th, 2011.

The bot which gets to play in the challenge match is selected by running a tournament between the bots:

The registration for the tournament is currently open.

Instructions on how to develop you own bot is here:

Interesting. How does Arimaa compare to Go in terms of complexity?

Lower game tree complexity since the game length is about half, although the branching factor is substantially higher. But I personally don't consider any of those a good measure on how difficult or easy a game will be for computers. Planetwars is probably a good example of why. While I haven't figured out the actual numbers I'm sure its branching factor and game tree complexity are pretty high up there. Yet it is significantly easier to write quite good computer players for.

As far as difficulty to write a good computer player for Arimaa. My completely subjective opinion is that it falls between Chess and Go in difficulty. Probably landing closer to the Go end of the scale.
