Huh, you're right, the spec does say that! IMO it needs to be altered.

It's possible (albeit unlikely against a good opponent) for a player to continue in the game as long as they have either planets or ships.

Well, I wrote the spec, so it's only natural that the spec includes my misunderstanding. ;)

After engaging the problem for a few days, I find it much, much more complicated than Tron. However, there are already some preliminary rumblings about stalemated positions, i.e. games that would go on forever if there weren't a turn cutoff. The fact that there are jillions of possible moves every turn doesn't force strategy to be complex if the game inherently has drawish tendencies. Perhaps there is a relatively simple strategy that ensures each player "his half" of the board, i.e. the type of thing that turned many Tron maps into draws.

Presumably the teeny-tiny stalemate issue that exist at the moment will get worse and worse as we get deeper into the contest. The issue of drawish maps might eventually haunt this contest as much as it did the Tron contest. But the good news is that we are starting from a lower level of stalemates, which might be an indication that the even an increased level of stalemates produced by better bots won't be very high.

Part of the stalemate tendency is that all the maps are symmetric and there's no random events to jar bots out of a routine. The only thing which keeps it from being a mirror-game is the one-turn delay before you know what your opponent chose to do.

What if each win/lose/tie matchup was running an asymmetric map twice, switching starting positions?
