Disallow 'starter package' bots

Postby zlobni.vampir » Wed Sep 15, 2010 3:23 pm

just do not allow submission of unmodified 'starter package' files (default MyBot or RageBot for example) or allow submission, but don't let them play - so people could just check if they're able to submit a bot, and that their submission has been accepted.
This could be implemented as a simple checksum comparison - if someone bother to add at least one whitespace or read the forums to find out that he needs at least one bit changed to get into play - it's already worth something.

This change will be completely against the idea of the "Quick Start". The contest is not only for strong programmers but for beginners too! Let them play against weak starter bots of other beginners. This will encourage them to spend time for upgrading their bots.

I've started with unmodified "stater bot" and I was able to get 1st place for few hours today ;)

I'm too to owners of weak forgotten bots.

Yes. The quickstart is important, and a great way to get started.

Perhaps after a certain amount of play, we could stop playing a default bot.

I'm in favor of fewer quickstart bots. I was up at #60 in the rankings for a while since I had a massive win streak, the majority of those were the default bot.

Now that my bot has fought some competitive bots, it has dropped to 200-ish. The plummet was kind of depressing, though somewhat expected.

Personally the speed at which you can get a bot into the event and have it ranked is one of the biggest pluses of the whole competition. The active encouragement to submit the default bot, and then the page that gives you a few clear hints (with code) to improve it is invaluable for encouraging people to participate.

Once you are in and ranked, updating the code and resubmitting it is trivial, but the initial entry into the competition will be a big barrier for some people and removing it entirely by essentially forcing you to submit something as part of the quick start guide is great.

I appreciate that your own personal bot is loosing out on a few cycles of playtime to accommodate the newer players, but that is just part of the competition's popularity. There are two solutions to this, one play outside of the competition of you want more games (the tcp or off-line options) or two help provide more CPU power to the computer club kind enough to run the competition.

While many of us are ego centric geeks trying to prove something, I am sure a large number of schools / computer clubs would be interested in participating in a more social fashion, and anything to discourage 'weaker' players 'clogging' the servers should be avoided.

Finally the rankings are ELO style and relative, so having more people gives you a better resolution of raking and makes no difference to the players in the top %.

We are going to try later on to set a max game cap for the number of games default bots play. However, they will always play in the main tournament - that's part of the fun.

We may also implement something where your bot resubmissions start out playing at your old rank, rather than starting out playing middle-of-the-pack bots.
