I suppose if you make Ants, but it's 3D it could work.

Think in another way: Chess is ancient game, and this fact doesn't stop newcomers. ANTS are the same.
Of course the experience matters, but it doesn't ruin the game. It only makes game more interesting: as new tactics are invented by newcomers.
If you have enough time you can invent new algorithm to overcome xathis. So in long run it helps to AI development. Newcomers can use experience of masters to make world better...

I'm not saying his code was bad, there are several things he did that I think are brilliant and he did make additional improvements during the contest. All I'm saying is that Xathis had a bit of a head start. While his bot is clearly one of the best, and he did very well especially considering his young age and relative little coding experience, I think some of the other contestants had even more impressive bots and managed to get awfully close to beating Xathis even without the huge head start that he had.

Relatively easy to set up (very easy for those familiar with Linux and ssh). I had one running from late March, discontinued around May due to lack of use.
You could also run a contest server with this code:

The setup is harder, though, and it insists that you run a specific obsolete Ubuntu (11.04 from memory).
