Game's CutOff Rules

Postby JG.WAS » Sat Nov 12, 2011 7:39 pm

I would like to interrogate the staffs (and the programmers) about the game's cutOff Rules:

1. Food Not Being Gathered
2. Ants Not Razing Hills
3. Lone Survivor
4. Rank Stabilized
5. Turn Limit Reached

For me, i guess Rank Stabilized (4) is a fair rule, Turn Limit Reached (5) is a kind of fair even that I would like to see battles till the end (or maybe till 5000 turns) to test the efficacity of a Bot handling more than 500 ants, and Food Not Being Gathered (1) is a half-fair :)

But for the rest (2, 3), they seem unfair to me, specially Ants Not Razing Hills (2) ; you can have a battle for about 300 turns (at the end, it's a game where tactics are strongly advisable, and attacking with the minimum of the loss is the best strategy), killing all the enemy ants (except one or too) and suddenly Rank Stabilized is invoked ...
For Lone Survivor (3), it's a disaster. You can put 3 ot 4 ants in a corner and hope that all Bots will end up with a timeout or crash.

If the other bots are crashing or timing out, the survivor deserves the first place.

I think the Lone Survivor cutoff is unfair as well. As I posted before, there are certain rare cases in which it is actually beneficial to intentionally suicide or timeout due to the way the cutoffs work.

And why should a starter bot that literally just sat on the mound the whole game get more credit than a bot that expands all over the map, razes several hills, and then times out on the last turn? It's absurd.

It doesn't, but if there are enough surviving hills on the map, it's pretty much guaranteed victory.

I think "rank stabilized" has problems. In one game my bot was fighting against one strong opponent till the very end while
the other competitors all timed out in the middle. Finally the strong bot razed my bot's hill and I got 0 points and immediately after rank got stabilized !? If the game were allowed to go on that strong bot would have easily razed all the hills leaving the rest of the opponents with 0 points as well. But it turns out fighting to the end actually looses you points.

This contest is supposed to be a test of programming and problem solving, no? Since when did you ever change the problem instead of the program?
