Please stop making bad multi-hill maps

Postby zanirzrold » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:53 am

I love multi hills, don't get me wrong. But there is no skill involved when all of the hills are within 15 steps of an enemy ant hill. is a great example of a bad map. There is no skill involved in winning or losing this map. Perhaps I'm missing the point and this is all "part of the game," but it's almost entirely luck who wins these maps.

Please enlighten me

I agree! The result of game on such map's on 50-70% depends on luck and skill of the nearest neighbour.
Two nearby standing hill's only increase chances of simultaneous destruction.
Sorry for my bad English.

I have to say, I looked at the most recent game you played on this map, http://aichallenge.org/visualizer.php?g ... &user=2060 , and although you did indeed have an unlucky start, the middle and end of the game were interesting and showed up cool strengths and weaknesses in the surviving bots.

However, I also do much prefer maps where I have more time to build up before I'm thrust into the action... the "in medias res" approach is fine for starting a story, but for building a hive it's pretty intense.

I'll consider a hill density requirement for maps.

ChrisH, nice game. My bot (rebelxt15) had decent advantage but you managed to come back due to better combat logic and field coverage.

I am also not a fan of multi-hill maps with very close hills. It seems that a lot depends on luck and strength of your neighbors. If your neighbors all decide to attack you at the start then there is not much you can do. I know that after many games the effects of this randomness will even out. However, this could take a long time. It would be much easier to modify the minimum distance between hills.
