ANTS is over, long live ANTS!

Ideas for the Future

ANTS is over, long live ANTS!

This contest was so amazing to take part in,
I think we should give it a try with a following combat adjustment.

The Story.

An ant must kinda swing his body/legs/... to throw an acid ball at their enemies.
So it needs some room around itself to do it effectively.

If some ant is surrounded with obstacles like other ants (friend or foe), walls,
hills or food (but not water, water does not disturb swinging over),
its attack suffers some range loss.

Number of obstacles, could vary from 0 to 8 (diagonally adjacent cells count also).

Effective attack radius square ER^2 varies from 1 to Attack radius square R^2(it was 5).

The Idea.

crowdness C = ( Number of obstacles + 1 ) / 2

(division result is integer)

0 -> C = 0
1,2 -> C = 1
3,4 -> C = 2
5,6 -> C = 3
7,8 -> C = 4

Effective attack radius square:

ER^2 = 1 + (4-C)*(R^2-1)/4;

(division result is integer)

So, assuming R^2 = 5

ants with 7 or 8 obstacles can attack only four directly
adjacent cells, ER^2 = 1,

..x
x a x
..x

Ants with 3,4,5 or 6 obstacles can attack some more cells

x x x
x a x
x x x

Ants with 1 or 2 obstacles:

....x
..x x x
x x a x x
..x x x
....x

Ants with no obstacles:

.. x x x
x x x x x
x x a x x
x x x x x
..x x x

Consequences.

1. Large dense groups are more vulnerable.

2. Assuming 3x3 square rule for maps, narrow corridors are harder to hold.

3. Ants gathering food are more vulnerable.

4. Hills are easier to protect.

This seems to be more balanced and producing much more action.
But computational overhead is very small.

So, folks,
what do you think,
should we give it a try?

Best regards,
romasffm.

Sorry, the attack diagrams are bad formatted.
