Are you using Python 3.x? I think the tcp client code I downloaded works only with 2.7.2+. Somebody said they got a Python 3 version, but didn't say where.

Nope. I'm running 2.7.2.

Zedenstein, if that's bhickey's server, there is a small error in the howto:
it's NOT: python tcpclient.py polonius 2081 "python MyBot.py" username password [num_rounds]
BUT : python tcpclient.py bhickey.net 2081 "python MyBot.py" username password [num_rounds]

note, different server name there, which could explain the error you got
