MATLAB Support

Postby tomthans » Thu Nov 03, 2011 11:07 pm

Hello all -

I have a friend who'd love to participate in the challenge after I told him all about it, but as he's a mechanical engineer, he's not especially fluent in any programming language save for the object-oriented support offered by .

Although I don't know how much work it would take to provide support for MATLAB, I do know that if it were offered, the contest would be opened up to many more bright engineering minds who may not have experience in one of the currently supported programming languages.

Just a thought, I'd like to hear what the community thinks. But perhaps I should be careful what I ask for - we may just end up with a harder-to-crack top100 ;)

Cheers,
Tom

edit: it's worth mentioning that MATLAB seems to , so maybe that could provide a good headstart?

Matlab is a great language, but it is not free. So I doubt that the admins will support it. Instead I would suggest Octave or FreeMat which are free alternatives to Matlab. Python also has some of the functionality of Matlab through numpy.

+1'd. I thought about this myself, but I agree with the above poster - there's just no way. All the languages they picked have an easy compiler or interpreter.

Would definitely make this task easier if I didn't have to sharpen my C pencil. :)

So... Is anyone interested in this? If Octave is supported on the server as I've shown above, I'm willing to write a starter package for it.

If you can offer a starter package and instructions on how to compile/run we'll look into it.

Is the natty octave package acceptable? It would be the easiest to use(1 line addition).

I haven't tried it but I assume that package should be ok.

When I have the starter package I will contact you.
