Game Idea: Shape Battle

Postby stupidquestions » Sun Jan 01, 2012 8:20 pm

There would be a grid (with impassable tiles) and every player would have only one creature to control. That creature could move and leave a trail and, when that trail forms a shape (it doesn't have to be regular, but it has to be closed), it would receive points equal to the area of that shape minus number of impassable tiles inside of it (or something like that), and the shape would disappear. The other players could "break" your trail, preventing you from closing your shape. Also, if you form a shape around your enemy, the enemy would lose (for example) the same number of points that you would get, and get eliminated if he falls to zero points. The winner would be either the only player that survives or the player with the largest amount of points.

I like some of the other suggestions, but most of them are somewhat complex... This is simple and could be made as complex as it needs to be. And this is just the basic idea, variations could be countless (more than one creature, bonus for regular shapes, different scoring system and so on...)

What do you think?

Love the idea! It is simple, easy to explain and yet could have a very complex strategy.

I am bothered by one thing though. If bots are intelligent then the best strategy seems to break your opponent's shape. However, if everyone concentrates on braking others shapes then the game would become quite boring to watch and no one would score any points. On the other hand, if opponents are too far from each other (so don't interact) then they will all play optimally by making shapes with the largest area/shortest perimeter (such as a circle). How can we modify the game to avoid these problems?

Well, my idea is that you have to find balance between drawing shapes that are very large (and bring a lot of points, but are risky because someone might break them), drawing small shapes (which are safer but bring less points) and breaking your enemies' shapes. If you just break shapes of your enemies, you won't get any points and you might get eliminated. Furthermore, if there are at least three players in the game, you won't be able to break everyone's shapes all the time. Besides, there could be a fog of war or something... I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not, there are so many variations possible in this game, it could be VERY complex. I just have the basic idea and I thought maybe someone who's a bigger expert than me could like it, and then suggest the details of its realization. ;)
