I think that an increase in the number of turns would be good... And that in order to avoid any 'banking', a random number of turns should be included. Eg, games are from 250 - 300 turns long.

I *did* have 1 gave that would have gone on forever - 1 enemy ship on an (invisible) 0 growth rate planet. Fixed now, of course.

As for 'unfairness' in deciding victory, its arbitrary but measureable. I think that the number of turns could be upped a little, and a random component added. And, if '200 turns is enough', and the games don't (usually) go on that long all the better.

Perhaps even a 100 'shortgame' limit for the bottom 1/2 of the rankings.

And, most importantly... any favours you can call for cpu resource?

I'm a fan of games ending at turn 200. Having a defined endgame to program against is good.

In any case, we will need to lock down the final parameters rules at least a month before the end of the competition.

I'm in top 100 and I think that 200 turn is perfect. Almost every game is end by that time or there is a clear winner. IMO most of the game lasting longer than 200 are because of bug in the code (like this planet is too far I don't attack it...) or weak bot (starting bot)

Any word on "locking" this down?
It was like that when I got here.

Why? If people want to talk in it, so be it. If not, it'll slowly go down and get forgotten. Unless someone posts in it, like you.

There is a patch up for review that will send the number of turns to bots http://code.google.com/p/ai-contest/iss ... ail?id=182

This has been basically approved and just needs someone to merge it into trunk.
